Similar to other tower defense games, but even more advanced, Plants vs. Zombies sees players planting different types of plants, each with their own unique offensive or defensive capabilities, to stop a horde of zombies from devouring the brains of the resident living inside.
In the original Plants vs. Zombies, they must plant across the front lawn, back lawn with a pool, and the roof of their house to stop a huge variety of zombies that can come in a number of types that have different attributes and abilities. From zombies that can tunnel or pole vault over obstacles, to balloon and Zamboni riding zombies, to Thriller-inspired dancing zombies that can raise others from the ground, to even zombies that wear armor such as tin buckets, carry screen doors, and ride pogo sticks that make them harder to dispatch.
In the Facebook game Plants vs. Zombies Adventures, players take their plants on a road trip to defeat brand-new varieties of zombies and prevent them from reaching their RV. Player's can also expand their town by reaching certain items on their road trip. The player can design their town however they like, while planting defenses to defend it from zombie sneak attacks containing zombies that only wear a barrel, wear a stack of hats as protection, or form a conga line.
In the long-awaited sequel Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time, players join Crazy Dave, their neighbor, on a travel through time fighting zombies in places like Ancient Egypt, pirate ships, and in the Wild West. The player will unlock a variety of new plants, as well as fight tons of new zombies based on the time periods, such as seagulls carrying tied-up zombies, archaeologist zombies, or even a zombie that rides a piano.
The game also features extra modes that are unlockable as the player progresses through the game's main Adventure Mode. These include Survival Mode, Puzzle Mode, and a selection of mini-games including zombie themed versions of PopCap games Bejeweled and Insaniquarium. On the iOS and Android versions of the original Plants vs. Zombies, a mode called Quick Play lets players play their favorite levels over again. Players can also purchase items and plant upgrades with money dropped by zombies or won by playing these extra modes. The versions available through Steam, on iOS devices, on Android devices, on the Xbox 360, on the Nintendo DS, DSiWare and the Game of the Year versions also feature achievements.
